1/2 onion large, I usually use a white one, for mildness
2 cloves garlic
1 1/4 tsps sea salt kosher or coarse
1/4 tsp red pepper flakes to taste
1 tbsp olive oil plus extra for drizzling
3 basil leaves cut into thin ribbons
grated parmesan cheese for serving, optional
